What You’ll See Underwater at Caño Island
Caño Island’s waters are a protected haven for an incredible variety of marine species. During your two snorkeling sessions you may encounter white-tipped reef sharks resting on the sandy bottom, large schools of colorful tropical fish including parrotfish, angelfish and surgeonfish, sea turtles gliding gracefully through the reef, spotted eagle rays and manta rays, moray eels peeking from rock crevices, octopus, lobsters and sea urchins among the coral formations, and dolphins frequently spotted on the boat ride to and from the island. The island itself is also home to rich jungle vegetation and seabirds, making the experience as rewarding above the water as below.
Tour Schedule
7:15 AM: Depart from Drake Bay by boat for the one-hour ride to Caño Island. Keep an eye out for dolphins, flying fish, and humpback whales (seasonal). First Snorkeling Session (45 to 60 min): Explore the first reef site with your guide, who will point out marine species and help beginners get comfortable in the water. Island Break (30 min): Rest on the beach, enjoy snacks and take in the stunning surroundings of the biological reserve. Second Snorkeling Session (45 to 60 min): Explore a second reef location, often the most spectacular of the two, with the highest concentration of fish and coral. San Josecito Beach (30 to 40 min): Stop at this beautiful secluded beach on the return trip. Approximately 1:30 PM: Return to Drake Bay. Lunch included.
