If you only book one thing in Drake Bay, make it this. One day you walk into the rainforest of Corcovado National Park, the place National Geographic called the most biologically intense on Earth. The next day you float above coral gardens with sea turtles at Caño Island Biological Reserve. These are the two ecosystems that make the Osa Peninsula unique, and together they cost less than booking each tour on its own.
Day 1: Sirena Station, Corcovado National Park
We leave Drake Bay early by boat along the coast to Sirena Ranger Station, the largest and most important station in Corcovado. It sits in the heart of the park, where wildlife is most concentrated, which is why it is the best place in Costa Rica to see animals in the wild.
With your certified naturalist guide you will look for howler, spider and white faced capuchin monkeys, sloths, scarlet macaws, coatis and, with some luck, a Baird’s tapir. Access to Corcovado is limited by daily time slots. Park permits need the full name and passport number of every traveler, and once issued they cannot be changed or refunded.
Day 2: Snorkeling at Caño Island
On a different day you take the boat out to Caño Island Biological Reserve, one of the best snorkeling spots on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Its clear water holds more than 15 species of coral and a huge variety of marine life: sea turtles, white tip reef sharks, rays, big schools of tropical fish and volcanic rock formations.
The crossing is also a hotspot for marine mammals. Depending on the season you can see humpback whales, spotted dolphins and rough toothed dolphins on the way.
