Corcovado National Park has two main entrances for visitors: Sirena Station and San Pedrillo Station. Most day trips from Drake Bay go to Sirena because it’s more manageable and you get the best chance of spotting animals.
San Pedrillo Station is more remote and less crowded. Located about 27 kilometers from Drake Bay, the hike to San Pedrillo takes 7 to 8 hours through some of the most pristine rainforest in Central America. Very few visitors come here, which means you’ll experience Corcovado with almost no crowds. The wildlife is just as abundant, but you need significantly more time and fitness to access it.
From a practical standpoint, Sirena is the choice for most visitors. You can do a day trip and still have time to explore trails around the station and see monkeys, sloths, tapirs, and jaguars if you’re lucky. The trail is challenging but doable for people with moderate fitness. Coming back the same day is tiring but possible.
San Pedrillo requires an overnight stay or a very early start and late return. Unless you’re seriously interested in backcountry hiking and want to get away from other people entirely, Sirena offers better value for time invested. You’ll see more wildlife in less time because the trails around Sirena are more varied.

Cost and Logistics
Both Sirena and San Pedrillo require a guide and entry fees. The park entrance fee is 25 USD per person, which is the same regardless of which entrance you use. The main difference in cost comes from transportation and guides. A guided day trip to Sirena from Drake Bay costs between 80 and 120 USD per person depending on the operator. Transportation to San Pedrillo is more expensive because of the distance, typically running 150 to 200 USD for transportation and guide services.
Physical Requirements
Sirena is physically demanding but achievable for most people with moderate fitness. The trail is hilly and muddy, but it’s well-marked and used by thousands of visitors annually. Bring hiking boots with good grip and expect to take 4 to 5 hours each way. Many people stop for rest breaks along the way, which is normal.
San Pedrillo requires serious hiking fitness. The trail is longer, more remote, and less maintained. You’ll be hiking in heat and humidity for 7 to 8 hours. This is not a casual walk. Only commit to San Pedrillo if you’re comfortable hiking all day in tropical conditions.
Wildlife Viewing Opportunities
Sirena is famous for wildlife encounters. The multiple trail intersections mean more chances to see different species. You might see howler monkeys in the canopy, capuchin monkeys in groups, sloths hanging from branches, and if you’re very lucky, jaguars or pumas. The station itself is located in prime wildlife habitat.
San Pedrillo offers wildlife viewing, but it’s less predictable because so few guides go there. You’re more likely to see animals because they haven’t learned to avoid humans, but the lack of trail infrastructure means you spend more time hiking and less time observing. However, seeing wildlife in its natural, undisturbed state is special.

Both trails are more pleasant during the dry season from December to April. During the rainy season from May to November, trails become very muddy and hiking is more exhausting. If you’re planning a Corcovado visit, aim for December through March for the best experience at either entrance.
Which Should You Really Choose?
Sirena is the right choice if this is your first Corcovado experience, if you have only one day, or if maximizing wildlife viewing is your priority. It offers incredible rainforest hiking with genuine chances to see exotic wildlife. You can do it as a day trip and return to Drake Bay for the evening.
San Pedrillo is the choice for experienced hikers who want a deeper wilderness experience and don’t mind spending more time and money. It’s perfect if you can stay overnight in the park and want to explore multiple days. The remoteness and solitude justify the extra effort for the right traveler.
Both entrances take you into the same national park and the same incredible rainforest. The choice comes down to your fitness level, available time, and what kind of experience you want from Corcovado.d challenging.
